Facing Storms
Raging thunderstorm
Roars incessantly louder
Against my resolve
I seem to be giving a lot of thought to Haiku, lately. On the surface, it’s an easy form to mimic by counting syllables. But the more I write, the more I’m challenged to engage the form in it’s more subtle aspects. I struggle to tie in a natural theme and to surprise the reader with the finishing sentence. I realize that the form isn’t as easy as it lets on at the beginning where I was writing a lot of 17 syllable non-haiku poems.
I wrote this poem in response to a writing prompt on Carpe Diem. Hopefully, my work does justice to the work by Kyoshi Takahama, who I was trying to emulate.

Yes, haiku still difficult to grasp but sometimes get it right. I think I write more senryu but who knows? Working on your thought process for it will improve it. I must read more about it. Welcome to Carpe Diem.
And who will win, I wonder: you or the storm?
Standing Firm
Great read 🙂
