Before I Wake

Sleeptime caresses throughout the night
Bodily warmth under the soft cotton sheets

Lovely curves beneath a pale blue blanket
Calico kitty perches on the bed corner

White noise as the air filter hums
She gently snores with a light rustle

Parched lips cling with a taste of morning glue
And demand a sip of quenching water

Thoughts of love and a lazy day pervade
Before the mind races with the day’s demands

Traces of sweet perfume linger in my memory
As phantom wisps of coffee entice me

It’s time to get up

Day 11 of NaPoWriMo calls for a poem with detail, ending in an abstract line.  I’m a little tired this morning, so I decided to write about waking up.  Now I’m considering crawling back into bed!

You already had me, but the coffee clinched it.

Oh, the ending is a heartbreaker for me! I wish for once we could have a LONG, still moment to enjoy all the beauty and spontaneity of the world.

Your descriptions are beautiful, Gene. I love the words you choose to use: “phantom wisps of coffee” ~> that right there is truly poetry. Great job, Gene 🙂
