Natural Survival

Scorpion waiting
Sun scorches everything green
In cacti filled lands

Critters cowering
Darkness hides the world from view
While owls see at night

Sparrow finds its nest
Clouds enveloping the sky
Cannot touch the stars

Day 22 of NaPoWriMo falls on Earth Day.  I decided that haiku would be perfect for today since they’re supposed to be about nature, anyway.

I looked for inspiration at the Carpe Diem website where I found poems by Soseki Natsume, which I tried to emulate.  I was struck how he mentioned something benign as nature howls against itself, then shows how nature has found it’s balance in the same poem.  I tried to catch that spirit here in my three unrelated haiku.

  3. Very nicely done Gene. really I like how you have used the Soseki Natsume haiku for your inspiration and turned it into this triplet … chapeau!
